3 Unique Ideas for Tangerines


There are lots of different types of tangerines (which get their name from those originally exported from Tangier), including the Pixie, which is grown right here in the USA, in Southern California’s beautiful Ojai Valley. Tangerines are good for you. They are low calorie (50 calories per), provide potassium (for hydrating your cells), fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. I recently went to Ojai for the Pixie harvest (and left with bagfuls), and I learned the following ideas for what you can do with tangerines this spring.

  1. Cut them up and add them to your water—they give a great flavor and also make an attractive display for spring and summer gatherings, as well as upgrade the look (and taste) of the office water cooler.
  2. Pixies, like other fruits, offer quick energy in the form of carbohydrate; so pair them with a variety of nuts and seeds for a balanced grab-n-go eating occasion.
  3. Pixies’ sugar provides a fruit acid that is an excellent addition to a sugar scrub for your skin (thanks, Ojai’s Oaks Spa, for the idea). Simply add tangerine juice to a quality sugar scrub you already have at home.

Ojai Pixie Treat Salad
Serves 6

Ingredients

6 cups fresh greens, torn into bite-size pieces (if you use kale, let salad marinate 1 hour minimum before serving)
4 Ojai Pixie tangerines, peeled and sectioned
¼ small red onion, slivered
2 avocados, sliced
½ cup sliced almonds, toasted
12 nasturtium flowers, edible

Dressing
2 Tbsp Ojai Pixie tangerine juice
6 Tbsp organic olive oil
2 Tbsp champagne vinegar
2 tsp raw honey
1 tsp whole-grain mustard
½ tsp cracked black pepper
2 Tbsp fresh mint, minced
Kiss of sea salt
Whisk all ingredients together—serving size 2 Tbsp.

Instructions

  1. Toss greens with the salad dressing and the onion. Divide the dressed greens on the plate. Arrange the Pixies, avocado and nasturtiums in a swirl. Sprinkle the almonds on top.
