4 Natural Teeth Whiteners You Likely Already Own

Just like a fresh coat of paint can revive a room, whitening your teeth can instantly make you look younger, healthier and even happier—since you will likely smile a whole lot more. If you want pearly white teeth but aren’t sure over-the-counter bleaching products are for you, check out these natural options. Some of them might already be on your kitchen shelf.

Often found in both professional and at-home whitening products, hydrogen peroxide exerts a gentle bleaching effect.

Baking Soda

One of the most common ingredients in store-bought toothpastes, baking soda is a powerful stain fighter. As it’s fairly abrasive, you’ll only want to brush with it one to two times per week. Dip a wet toothbrush into a mixture of ½ teaspoon baking soda and ½ teaspoon table salt. Brush gently.

Banana Peel

The inside of a banana peel contains high levels of magnesium, manganese and potassium, all of which can help remove stains from teeth. Once a week, cut a small piece of peel from a ripe, but not too ripe, banana (i.e., no brown spots) and rub on teeth for about two minutes. Brush afterwards.

Coconut Oil

The antibacterial properties of coconut oil have been shown to the reduce gingivitis-causing plaque that can stain teeth. Each morning, swish one tablespoon of organic cold-pressed coconut oil around in your mouth for five minutes.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Often found in both professional and at-home whitening products, hydrogen peroxide exerts a gentle bleaching effect. While the brown-bottled version found at the grocery store is a weaker concentration than what’s in whitening kits, and will take longer to whiten teeth, it’s also safer and gentler. Rinse daily with a solution that is one part 3% hydrogen peroxide to one part water.
