A Sunscreen You Can Feel Good About
There’s a lot to consider when buying a sunscreen these days. Does it protect against UVA and UVB rays? Does it use chemicals that may be harmful to your health? And then there are potentially unsafe nanoparticles—minute active ingredients that are broken down so small they can be absorbed into your skin.
Finding products that meet these criteria and work is challenging. Some that fit the bill are Goddess Garden’s line of sunscreen products.
Nova Covington founded the Boulder, Colorado-based company when her daughter was allergic to chemicals in sunscreen and she couldn’t find any great alternatives on the market.
The active ingredients in Goddess Garden are minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients work by blocking the sun’s rays. Most conventional sunscreens use chemicals instead that work by absorbing the sun’s damaging rays; the downside is that the skin also absorbs them.
In addition to the minerals that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, the Goddess Garden products contain aloe vera, shea butter and lavender; and the percentage of organic content ranges from 85 percent to 94 percent, making it one of the highest on the market.
A distinguishing quality of the product line is how transparently it applies. Many products that rely on sun-blocking minerals give a white or chalky appearance to the skin, whereas Goddess Garden has managed to create a transparent product without using nanotechnology.
Another plus of natural sunscreens like Goddess Garden is that they won’t pollute the water you swim in or hurt coral reefs or fish. The company’s continuous spray allows you the ease of conventional products but minus the aerosol, and the bottle is recyclable.
The products cost more, but we feel they’re worth it.
