Chana Masala (gluten-free, vegan)

Chana masala is a popular Indian recipe consisting of chickpeas in a delicious tomato sauce. It’s full of warming spices like turmeric, cumin and garam masala. Serve over your choice of rice, cauliflower “rice” or roasted vegetables.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes

Yield: Serves 4–6

1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 medium yellow onions, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon garam masala
½ teaspoon sea salt
1 (14.5 oz) can crushed tomatoes (with liquid)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup vegetable broth
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 (15 oz) cans chickpeas


  1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic and ginger, and sauté for 5 minutes.
  2. Turn the heat to low and add the coriander, cumin, turmeric, paprika and garam masala. Stir for a few minutes, until spices are fragrant, then add the remaining ingredients. Cover and let simmer for 20 minutes, until chickpeas are tender. Serve warm.
