Chloe’s Super Growing-Kid Smoothie

My 11-year-old, Chloe, is a devout vegetarian. She also dances 10 hours a week and does that thing all kids do that requires nutrition, grow. Add to that she isn’t a big breakfast eater and I’m faced with the challenge of getting enough calories in her each day. Thankfully she will slurp down a smoothie before school. Here’s her favorite regular smoothie. I like it because she gets around 10 grams of protein from Tera’s Whey, which I feel good about because it’s certified organic—the only whey protein on the market that I know of that is. The Natural Vitality Plant-Sourced Minerals offer an extra boost for insurance against deficiencies, and the coconut oil gives her some healthy fat.

Chloe’s Super Growing-Kid Smoothie
Hint for parents of picky eaters: serve it in a fancy cup with a straw.


1 cup mixed berries
1 cup coconut or nut milk
1 banana
1 scoop Tera’s Whey, Bourbon Vanilla
1 tsp coconut oil
1 tsp Natural Vitality Plant-Sourced Minerals


  1. Place all of the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Serve immediately.

    Ok, let me tell a couple facts

    Coconut milk, has the same saturated fatty acids that butter has. These fats end as bad cholesterol, but they can transform into good cholesterol (For more info: )


    Bad cholesterol can be transformed into good cholesterol ONLY IF THE KID DOES EXERCISE. We can asume that every kid with has a lot of energy and vitality and does exercise everyday when they play running games. BUT they can also be lazy indoor kids in homeschool. So be aware please parents, don´t exceed or feed them daily with coconut milk, we don´t want them with heart problems. Thx for yout attention.

    I disagree with what Victor said because nut and coconut milks are full of healthy fats and other plentiful nutritents that are important for a growing person. Also, this is clearly not an over-sized portion, and she said that her daughter dances so I don’t think this would pose any issue of over-eating at all. Also, not all saturated fats are the same, just because nuts and coconut have some saturated fats doesn’t make them anything like butter. Also, we should be commending this caring mother for taking the time to make a nice breakfast for her daughter that is something Chloe can tolerate in the mornings. When I was Chloe’s age I didn’t have a stomach for breakfast either and would just not eat because I was only offered standard breakfast foods. This is really nice to see a pretty pink smoothie being made for your daughter in the mornings 🙂

    I would like to voice one concern though:
    I found this link through Finding Vegan, and I would just like to say that whey powder is a derivative of cow milk, so this is -not- a vegan recipe!
    Also, if your daughter is a strict vegetarian, I think she cares about animals and would prefer to not support the milk industry, which kills millions of cows every year and subjects these intelligent animals to constant violation of their basic rights. Also, whey powder has a lot of the unhealthful stuff in milk that is linked to diabetes, stroke, and cancer (especially breast cancer), so I think you would be taking an additional step in the right direction to swap the whey for a cleaner plant-based protein powder. There are a lot of really good plant-based protein powders out there made from soy, hemp, flax, peas, etc. that you could try out, and I am sure your daughter would love 🙂

    Thanks for the great comments. No, this recipe isn’t vegan. I hope that because the whey protein is USDA certified organic that the dairy it is derived from is from cows raised and housed under the more humane conditions specified by the National Organic Program rules which aren’t great, but at least better then conventional treatment of cattle. Also, I don’t give this smoothie to Chloe everyday–some days it’s hemp, rice, pea protein, etc. This is by far her favorite though because of the creaminess the whey provides. I assume parents will tailor our recipes to fit their needs. For example, my daughter doesn’t get to eat lunch at her school until 1 pm, so she needs a good breakfast.
