DIY Whipped Lavender-Coconut Body Butter

Winter can leave your skin feeling thirsty for moisture 24/7. The result is dry, scratchy, uncomfortable skin. We love this recipe from our friend Sonnet Lauberth, author of In Sonnet’s Kitchen, for an easy DIY body butter that truly feeds your skin healthy moisturizing nutrients. You can find all the ingredients at your local natural products store or online at Amazon. Feel free to sub another essential oil scent for the lavender if you desire.

Prep time: 15 minutes


½ cup water
¼ teaspoon borax
1 cup coconut oil
¼ cup grated beeswax
5–10 drops lavender essential oil (or more if preferred)


  1. Boil the water, then add the water to a small bowl and mix in the borax. Set aside.
  2. Add the coconut oil and beeswax to a double boiler, or to a microwave-safe bowl, and heat until beeswax is completely melted. Mix in the essential oil.
  3. Pour the oil and beeswax mixture into a food processor and process, adding the hot water mixture in a slow steady stream. Continue processing until well incorporated (mixture should look like a white fluffy cream). Let cool, then store in a clean container with a lid.
  4. To use: Massage onto skin, particularly on rough patches like dry cuticles, elbows, knees and feet.
