Probiotics: Livening up your food, literally

Probiotics, we all need more of these beneficial microorganisms that boost our gut health (and our immunity and digestion). Maybe you get some with yogurt or a dietary supplement, but consider adding some traditional foods to the mix that contain these organisms naturally.

Here’s a handful to consider with two caveats: If the food is pasteurized the manufacturer must add probiotics afterward and don’t boil the foods since this will kill the good bacteria.

  • Sauerkraut
  • Miso
  • Pickles
  • Kombucha (A cold tea beverage)
  • Miso
  • Kim chi (a spicy Korean fermented cabbage)
